Bernice Linssen

Bernice about herself...

My paintings are in private collections in England U.S.A. Germany Australia and throughout N.Z. many are commission works. These works both traditional and contemporary are inspired by nature. e.g atmospheric sea and landscapes, close-ups of plants  can become  abstracts,  Rock formations may also become abstracts. The important factors to me are, colour and light, leading me to continually explore and experiment with subject matter and techniques. Painting is my passion but also just as important is to give the viewer pleasure.

My interest in Art began in childhood, the inevitable School Certificate and U E Art followed. I continued drawing and painting during my nursing training, then the shift to our isolated Far North farm. Abstracts, still life and landscapes in oils were extended through numerous courses with visiting tutors; Greg Whitecliff, Cyril Whiteoaks and  Louise Henderson.

In the early 80's farming economics dictated a change in direction. I began 18yrs of building and operating a large hand weaving business employing 27 outworkers and supplying 16 tourist shops, mainly knitwear boutiques.  My garments were based on colour and texture, satisfying my creative urge.

Following the sudden death of my husband my family decided to curb my aimlessness and persuaded me to sign up for a course with Lena Zankl, tackling the most difficult medium, Watercolour. Watercolour requires concentration, knowledge of pigments and their properties, and  of course experience with colour and colour mixing.
